Brilliant Bug Club!!

The great thing about AES Bug Club www.amentsoc.org/bug-club/ for children is that they get to see all sorts of fantastic things behind the closed doors in museums. Admit it, that is place most of us would love to explore! As if that is not enough, they even get to meet the men and women that work there and experience what it is they do all day. This is an awesome and unique opportunity for the children and everyone just wants to get them enthused. This time behind the scenes in the London Natural History Museum they learnt insects do not just exist as living creatures or pinned in drawers, they are also present in fossils and a prehistoric tree sap called Amber. Those that have seen the Jurassic Park movies will most certainly appreciate the secrets Amber has locked up inside! These incredible and ancient time capsules are one of the many hundreds of things being studied. Sometimes, to really put the icing on the cake, the children will even be given the chance to take something special home with them to rear and study. Judith Rose is a really wonderful lady who knows a serious amount about moths. At this event she was very kindly giving out Chinese Owl Moth Brahmaea hearseyi caterpillars to the children who wanted to have a go. I myself certainly find that the best way to learn about a creature is to observe it for as much of its life cycle as possible. The children too are encouraged to observe, note down changes and ask questions. Do not panic either as helpful advice is always an email away. Brilliant club, amazing opportunities!

Insects in Amber about 10 million years old and fossilized Mosquitoes from the Paleogene period which was 30 million years ago. That is pretty cool if you think about it.
