Working with an after school nature club

Busy few evenings helping an after school nature club design and create their bug garden. The children really got into the spirit of it and showed a great deal of thought in their habitat ideas. Looking forward to going back and doing a bug hunt with them when it gets warmer. Great stuff and fabulous to get our hands dirty! What I would love to see there one day is our magnificent Stag Beetles, Lucanus cervus. Just the most awesome beetle – check it out on www.ptes.org/stagbeetles .Near to the school I know there are Lesser Stag Beetles, Dorcus parallelipidedus, to be found. Equally cool but try saying the second latin name out loud in one go. Have built a great log pile of assorted species of deciduous wood so you just never know.....

Meet the gorgeous Dorcus.
